A great smile doesn’t necessarily have to cost serious money and time. Proper oral care starts with you, and it can be achieved with an easy at-home regimen.

Using a soft, nylon-bristle toothbrush and replacing it every three months (and after colds) to defend against bacteria is a good place to start. It’s important to brush for about two or three minutes, ideally after each meal and before bedtime to remove all cavity-causing debris and prevent gum disease.

Make sure you don’t brush too hard, as this can cause gums to recede, exposing the softer surface of the root and making it more prone to cavities and a gummy smile. Instead, gently brush in small, circular motions at a 45-degree angle, into the gum for optimal results. (Supersmile‘s 45° Lucite Toothbrush is guaranteed to create the proper angle.) Also remember to floss after each meal, wrapping the floss around the tooth to form a tight C shape and gliding it up and down rather than making a seesaw movement, which can cut and irritate gums.
