As a California native and breakout star of Scary Movie (in theaters June 5), Ruby Snowber is a Ford Models talent with a striking presence and an equally impressive range of interests, including ballet, surfing, thrift-store treasure hunting and knitting.
Following our recent conversation with Olivia Rose Keegan, Snowber is the latest star from the film to share her take on beauty and self-expression. Ahead of its release, we sat down with the actress to talk about working with Anna Faris, her simple three-step beauty routine and why she refuses to chase anyone else’s standard of beauty.
Scary Movie is a big deal! What was the moment when you realized 'it's all really happening?'
"Leading up to production, I expected to feel like such a fish out of water; I was so nervous. But on the first day of shooting, Marlon [Wayans] walked up to me, gave me a massive hug and said, ‘Welcome to the family.’ And that was the energy that reverberated through the entire cast and crew. It's a massive franchise and a cast full of absolute legends, but every single person was so kind, humble and welcoming. It made the entire experience feel safe and so much less daunting."
Horror and beauty can have a fun relationship on screen. Was there anything about your looks for the film that you can share beauty notes on?
"Linda [Villalobos] and Joyce [Gilliard] were magicians with my hair every day. It's a wig, but you would never be able to tell, and when the wig went on, my energy would shift, and I felt like I became my character. It's incredible how much life the hair and makeup bring to a character."
Walk us through your everyday routine. Are you a simple skin-care person, or do you do a lot of steps?
"I keep it simple! For skin care, I use a face wash, toner and moisturizer, and my go-to makeup look is concealer, tinted brow gel, a little eyeshadow on the lower lash line, mascara and a tinted lip balm that I also use on my cheeks. Most days, I just do my skin-care routine and call it a day. I have so much respect for anyone who can do makeup well. I often run out of patience halfway through and end up looking lopsided."
You're a dedicated thrift shopper. Any recent, really great vintage finds?
"The most exciting find would be this phenomenal Dior trench coat with a corduroy collar, it's kind of like a workwear meets high fashion piece. But my top thrift piece would have to be my go-to black leather jacket. It fits perfectly, and the leather is so soft, it immediately felt like a long-lost closet essential that I hadn't known I was missing."
What's the one product sitting on your vanity right now that you'd never travel without?
"The Maker Stag Eau de Parfum ($175). My mom gave it to me for Christmas years ago, and I haven't gone a day without wearing it since."
Surfing, pottery, knitting, cooking—the word is, you have this amazing range of hobbies. Which one do you turn to when you really need to decompress?
"It depends on the month, honestly. I tend to find a hobby and hyperfixate on it until I wear myself out and then rotate to a new one. I most recently picked up knitting on set for Scary Movie from Anna Faris and have been engrossed in it ever since. I don't go anywhere without my knitting now! But I will say that now that the weather is getting warmer, I am definitely feeling the surfing itch again."
Modeling with Ford means you've seen a lot of beauty standards up close. How has that experience shaped how you define beauty for yourself?
"The beauty standards we hold in society are established by people and companies who benefit economically. What makes someone beautiful should be up to the individual and what makes them feel beautiful. Seeing the belly of the beast when it comes to beauty standards makes you realize how unfulfilling it is to chase what others dictate as beautiful. It's a relentless rat race, and you can spend your life comparing yourself to others, trying to mimic what you're told is 'right.' But at the end of the day, the only person whose opinion should matter is your own."
If you could tell your teenage self one thing about beauty, what would it be?
"You will never look like anybody else, and that's what makes you beautiful!"
