Big congrats are in order for Laura Dern, who took home a BAFTA Award in London over the weekend for her supporting actress role in Marriage Story—an accolade she said was particularly special as her mother, Diane Ladd, won it for her role in 1974’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

While earning awards this season has been a bit of a regular move for the 52-year-old, she mixed up her pretty-in-pink style with an uncharacteristic updo for Sunday’s ceremony.

“Laura doesn’t normally like her hair up, so we wanted to create something soft and feminine for her,” hair stylist Ben Talbott told us, and shared this step-by-step (spoiler alert: there’s a lot of mousse involved!) for creating the look:

“First, I prepped the hair with Leonor Greyl Condition Naturelle ($38). Then, I used a generous amount of Amika mousse ($25) layered throughout the hair,” he says. “I then blow-dried the hair and used the T3 micro medium tong to create loose waves.”

For the final steps, Talbott pulled Dern’s hair back and twisted into a shape with a little teasing at the crown to give “a modern nod to the ’60s with some softness” on the shoulder. “We finished the look off with a beautiful Metallic Ruffle Barrette hair pin by Lelet NY and held the style in place with some pins and spritzes of Moroccanoil hairspray ($10-$24).”
