It’s no secret that La Mer is known for its ultra-luxe, science-backed formulas, and now, new research is further solidifying the celeb-loved brand’s place in the conversation about post-procedure skin care—and how its products may help your skin recover faster following treatments such as facial peels and lasers.
In a new study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (JCAD), La Mer, in partnership with the company’s owner, The Estée Lauder Companies, shared findings on how its Macrocystis pyrifera ferment-containing serum (MPF-Serum; a type of giant kelp) strengthens the skin barrier and speeds up recovery after dermatological procedures.
The clinical trials involved women aged 31 to 65. They measured the serum’s ability to boost hydration and strengthen the skin barrier over an eight-week period. When tested on skin recovering from 70% glycolic acid peels and non-ablative laser treatments, MPF-Serum outperformed standard moisturizers, meaning, the recovery was faster.
“Our research indicates that MPF-Serum provides tangible benefits for patients recovering from dermatological treatments, setting a new benchmark for post-procedure skin care,” said Claude Saliou, PharmD, a member of Estée Lauder Companies’ clinical sciences team and a contributor to the study, in conversation with Global Cosmetic Industry. “This innovation underscores the potential for science-led solutions in the beauty industry.”
In turn, the findings suggest that the brand’s kelp-infused formulas may be a more effective (and luxe) alternative to traditional ointments you might reach for after a peel, like petroleum jelly. The ingredient is present in La Mer’s proprietary “Miracle Broth” ferment, which is in the brand’s core formulations, such as its beloved Crème de la Mer ($200) and Treatment Lotion ($190). The price difference? Noticeable. But an excuse to splurge on high-end skin care? Priceless.
