The ‘Shrink-Wrap’ Laser Trend, Explained by Dermatologists

Is it too good to be true? We asked the experts.

It’s hard to keep up with viral skin-care trends at the pace social media pushes them out. The sheer volume makes it difficult to separate what’s actually worth trying from what’s better left alone. Skin-tightening treatments, in particular, have surged in popularity—especially in the era of rapid GLP-1 weight loss, with some comparing the results to “shrink-wrapping” the skin.

Recently, Lauren Goodman, founder of Juliana Clinics, described iLaser as a “shrink-wrap wonder.” It sounded almost too good to be true, so we asked a couple of doctors to weigh in—and we were pleasantly surprised by their responses.

What Is iLaser?

“ILaser is a unique and innovative technology that uses a 1940nm wavelength delivered through an ultra-thin fiber. This diode laser targets water within the dermis and subcutaneous fat, resulting in fat melting, skin tightening or both,” says Denver dermatologist Sarolta Szabo, MD. Washington, D.C. dermatologist Nina Hartman, MD notes that iLaser "allows for small-volume fat reduction and subdermal skin tightening and falls into the growing category of energy-based devices that bridge the gap between noninvasive treatments and surgery.”

What sets this laser apart is its ability to deliver energy subcutaneously. "We can safely reach temperatures that are difficult to achieve with devices that deliver energy through the epidermis. Bypassing the epidermis helps maintain safety while allowing higher temperatures that produce more effective fat reduction and skin tightening results,” explains Dr. Szabo. “In contrast, nonlaser energy devices have not been able to achieve the same level of efficacy as this laser technology.”

Dr. Szabo says iLaser stands out within its category. "With a very minimally invasive approach, we can achieve significant fat reduction, skin tightening, lifting and improvement in overall skin quality—results that were previously difficult to obtain with traditional procedures and minimal downtime,” she says.

Does iLaser Actually Have a 'Shrink-Wrapping' Effect?

“‘Shrink wrapping’ is a catchy phrase, but it’s ultimately marketing language,” says Dr. Hartman. “What the device actually does is deliver controlled thermal energy through a thin laser fiber placed beneath the skin. The heat can liquefy small amounts of fat while also causing immediate collagen contraction and stimulating long-term collagen remodeling. The result is a tightening response—which people describe as ‘shrink wrapping’—but it’s really about contraction and strengthening of the underlying tissue."

Who Is the Right Candidate for iLaser?

Dr. Hartman says iLaser is “most effective in individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity and minimal excess fat in small, targeted areas such as the jawline or submental region.” Dr. Szabo agrees, noting that iLaser is especially great for treating small, hard-to-reach fat pockets on the face as well as the abdomen, arms and above the knees.

Dr. Hartman adds that, as with any tightening procedure, proper patient selection and clear expectation-setting are essential. She emphasizes that this treatment is not a substitute for surgical skin removal in patients with significant laxity.

What to Expect During and After an iLaser Treatment

“ILaser is a minimally invasive procedure. Typically, a few small treatment ports are created to allow the laser fiber to enter the skin—approximately one mm on the face and two mm on the body. Due to their small size, these ports usually heal on their own within a few weeks,” says Dr. Szabo. Dr. Hartman notes that patients are often put on local anesthesia for comfort.

“Facial treatments typically take about one hour, including anesthesia, while body treatments may take one and a half to two hours depending on the size of the treatment area,” says Dr. Szabo. “Results continue to improve over several months due to ongoing stimulation of collagen and elastin production.”

Dr. Szabo adds that because fat is melted during the procedure, patients may experience mild to moderate swelling immediately afterward. She recommends wearing a compression garment for at least one week to support healing and optimize results, and notes that minimal bruising may occur.

Would iLaser Be a Good Fit for Tightening Skin After GLP-1 Weight Loss?

“After rapid weight loss associated with GLP-1 medications, many patients experience facial hollowing and skin laxity because fat volume decreases faster than the skin can contract,” explains Dr. Hartman. “In cases of mild to moderate laxity, iLaser can be helpful. However, it’s often best used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan,” she says, noting that patients generally benefit from combining tightening procedures with neuromodulators, hyaluronic acid fillers or biostimulatory injectables to address volume loss and hollowing, as well as resurfacing lasers to improve skin texture and fine lines.

Are There Other Treatments That Have a Similar 'Shrink-Wrapping' Effect?

“There are several energy-based devices that stimulate collagen in the deeper layers of the skin to create tightening—what patients often refer to as ‘shrink wrapping,’” says Dr. Hartman. “Noninvasive ultrasound and radiofrequency devices can achieve this effect without incisions or downtime. While results are generally more subtle compared to minimally invasive options like iLaser, they can be excellent choices for patients seeking skin tightening with minimal recovery.”
