With recent recalls such as a John Frieda hair conditioner (for microbial contamination) and Pure Cosmetics’ eyeshadow (for bacterial contamination), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is starting to question whether it should have a role in creating safety guidelines for personal care products.

Currently, the FDA doesn’t approve cosmetics before they are sent to market, nor does it have the power to recall items (that has to be done by the manufacturer). So the FDA held a public meeting last week to discuss how cosmetics are monitored and whether it should get in the game.

Firms like Johnson & Johnson, Avon and Loreal were in attendance, as microbiological testing, preservatives, packaging and other types of testing were discussed. We can expect to hear the results of that meeting after the New Year.

Meanwhile, what are your thoughts? Have you ever had what seemed to be an unsafe reaction to a beauty product? Do you think the government should get involved in ensuring our cosmetics are safe?
