Not too long ago, booking a spa treatment was all about unplugging—and it was just that. The facial or massage was relaxing, but much of the focus was on the experience: plush robes, calming music, spa amenities and uninterrupted relaxation. Today, however, luxury spa guests are asking for even more. Though they still welcome—and expect—the indulgence, they’re also much more savvy when it comes to ingredients, results and research.

It’s seemingly fueling a shift across the wellness industry, and skin-care brand Epicutis is at the forefront of it all. Luxury hotels and destination spas are increasingly partnering with the brand, a biotech-driven skin-care line known for its minimalist, science-backed formulations. The latest example? A new tie-up with ME Cabo by Meliá, a luxury beachfront resort in Cabo San Lucas, bringing Epicutis' science-first approach into a luxe spa destination. Ahead, read more about the partnership and why spas are leaning into science.

Why Luxury Spas Are Leaning Into Science

The evolution is a natural opportunity for growth, and it was perhaps inevitable. “Luxury spas have evolved far beyond being places to simply relax—they’ve become destinations for wellness and skin health,” Epicutis vice president of Global Spa & Wellness Carlos Calvo Rodríguez says. “Today’s guests want an experience that feels indulgent, but they also expect meaningful, lasting results.”

It makes sense that the spa guest is savvier than ever before, as we've seen consumers grow more and more knowledgeable when it comes to their skin-care routines, beauty purchases, treatments and more. This has, in turn, shifted the focus from sensory experiences alone to brands supported by clinical testing and noticeable results, like Epicutis.

“When therapists are using products backed by clinical research, they have complete confidence in what they’re recommending and delivering,” Rodríguez explains. “That confidence carries through every touchpoint of the spa experience, from the treatment room to the retail conversation. For us, bringing science into the spa isn’t about following a trend—it’s about elevating the entire experience with credibility, trust and results.”

In other words, an Epicutis facial isn’t just luxurious and doesn’t just feel good—it also performs.

Why Guests Want More Than Relaxation

According to Rodríguez, much of this shift is being driven by consumers themselves. “It comes down to trust,” he says. “Today’s spa guest is incredibly informed. They’re reading ingredient lists, researching clinical studies and looking beyond marketing claims.”

Instead of relying on luxurious textures or beautiful packaging alone (though that, of course, remains important), spa-goers increasingly want to understand why a product works.

“Guests are actively looking for brands that are transparent about what’s in a product and why it works—not just that it ‘feels nice,’” Rodríguez says. “When a guest asks their therapist, ‘Why this product?’ and the therapist can actually answer with data instead of a script, that’s the moment trust is built.”

Inside the Epicutis and ME Cabo by Meliá Partnership

The new partnership with ME Cabo by Meliá is the skin-care brand’s first collaboration with the Meliá hotel group, and Rodríguez notes the choice of property was especially meaningful.

“ME Cabo by Meliá is our first Meliá spa partnership anywhere in the world, so it was important to find a property that truly reflected the Epicutis philosophy,” Rodríguez says.

According to him, the hotel’s wellness-focused clientele aligns with the brand’s science-first mentality, making it a natural fit. “ME attracts a sophisticated, globally minded traveler who values wellness, seeks out innovation and appreciates brands rooted in authenticity,” he says. “At the same time, the property’s modern, design-forward aesthetic mirrors the clean, minimalist philosophy behind Epicutis. It felt like an authentic alignment from the very beginning.”

At ME Cabo by Meliá’s Korpo Wellness Experience and AUA Spa, guests can enjoy body treatments, massages and facials featuring Epicutis products, including the Lipid Body Treatment ($225), Oil Cleanser ($85) and more. In addition to your treatment, you can relax at the spa’s sun terrace, which features hot tubs and lounge beds, sauna or steam room.

Spa treatments now deliver guests both a moment of escape and the confidence that the products being used are supported by real science. And if Epicutis' latest partnership is any indication, clinical credibility, luxurious textures and real results are the future of wellness.
