This Sheet Mask Is the Newest Way to Tan Your Face This Summer

We know the power sheet masks have when it comes to hydrating, exfoliating and detoxing skin, but thanks to a new launch from self-tanning brand St. Tropez, you can also start reaching for the fun delivery system the next time you need to fake a straight-from-the-beach glow, stat.

The Self Tan Express Bronzing Face Sheet Mask ($9) looks and wears like any other sheet mask—it actually grips onto your face much better than others I’ve tried, making streaking a thing of the past and multitasking painless—and is even packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid like the ones in the skin care aisle do, but also dubs self-tanning ingredients for a dewy, natural-looking glow. Depending on your skin tone or preference, the intensity of the tan can be controlled by how long you leave the mask on for: five minutes for a light glow, 10 minutes for a medium shade and 15 minutes for a dark, deep tan. Intrigued by the concept (it merges two of my favorite things in the beauty world, after all), I decided to try it out. Here’s what I learned.

Using it is easy: Apply it onto clean, dry skin, ensuring the mask reaches up to your hairline, and leave on for no longer than 15 minutes (if you do, there may not be any excess serum left to massage around your eyes, brows and hairline to ensure a natural finish). Once the mask is removed and everything is blended in, wash your hands and wait for the serum to dry. While you shouldn’t cleanse your face for at least four hours, you’re free to apply makeup once it’s dry (I didn’t). With proper maintenance, your glow should develop within a few hours and last up to four days with proper maintenance (read: hydrating and minimal exfoliation).

After leaving the mask on for 10 minutes and letting the formula dry overnight before I washed it off, I was left with a golden glow that was much more hydrated and evenly blended than when I use my regular self-tanner and mitt. However, because the excess serum is massaged onto the neck, I do suggest tanning the remainder of your body, too, instead of only tanning your face to ensure a uniform look. If you’re naturally tanned everywhere but your face, you can probably skip that step, but start by keeping the mask on for five minutes and work your way up for best results.

The bottom line: For a foolproof, no-fuss solution to tan your face—or round out your tan if you’re a hat kind of gal on vacation—these handy sheet masks are a great go-to to stash in your bag or tanning drawer.
