It can be challenging for men to wade through rows of skin-care products they’ve never heard of. To help the the guys looking for some straightforward, hard-working skin care, we asked experts what they recommend men grab off the shelves. From face wash to sunscreen, every step of men’s skin-care is covered.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Body and Face Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 ($22)

Delray Beach, FL dermatologist Dr. Janet Allenby recommends this gentle sunscreen from La Roche-Posay. She says it’s non-greasy, non-tinted and great for daily usage.

Neutrogena Men Razor Defense Shave Gel ($6)

“The best drugstore skin care for men is Neutrogena shaving gel,” says West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. “It’s thick and protects the skin from irritation.”

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Daily Energizing Moisture Treatment for Men ($39)

Dr. Allenby says this moisturizer made specifically for men is non-greasy and calms skin. It’s especially perfect to use on sensitive skin after shaving, she adds.

EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($43)

“Sun protection is key for evening skin tone and protecting against skin cancer,” says Houston dermatologist Jennifer Segal, MD. This SPF is suited for acne-prone skin, so it has a lighter feel and is good for preventing breakouts in the beard area, she notes. “The tint is key because it does not cause white spots at the hair follicles.”

Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar ($210)

This product has great anti-aging benefits, especially when it comes to skin laxity around the eyes, says Dr. Segal, who notes “looking tired” is the most frequent concern among her male patients. “It’s anhydrous, so very silky and not greasy at all and easy to apply to the whole face without looking like any product is there,” says Dr. Segal. “Products only work if one is using them, so this is very important! Men love the light feel and the results.”

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel ($39)

Dr. Allenby also asked her male medical assistant, Sean Davis, who also works at Sephora, for some input. He says his favorite OTC products are those with effective ingredients like AHAs, vitamin C, peptides, etc. “Most men need simple routines, so the few steps they do have really need to work,” says Davis. “For example, Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel has AHAs to keep the skin polished.”

7 / 8

Scientific RX White Bamboo Exfoliator ($50)

Dr. Beer recommends this best-selling exfoliator. Using it two to three times a week will help scrub away dead skin cells, excess oils and pollutants.

Farmacy Honey Halo Ultra-Hydrating Ceramide Moisturizer ($48)

Davis recommends “a calming moisturizer with peptides to support the skin’s moisture barrier.” He likes Farmacy’s Honey Halo Ultra-Hydrating Ceramide Moisturizer.
