There are two types of people: those who can’t leave the house without a swipe of mascara, and those who rarely open a tube. I’m firmly the latter. I’ve been championing the no-mascara look for years, but not because I’m any sort of trendsetter. My stubbornly straight, fine lashes tend to fall almost immediately after applying mascara, so the effort was never worth the result. (If you’re curious, this is the only mascara that works for me.) Over time, I leaned into a minimal makeup routine, opting instead to pile on blush or amp up my brows. But cue my genuine surprise when “mascara is dead” began trending on TikTok this month. The trend now has the stamp of approval of celebrities and influencers.
Admittedly still envious of sky-high, feathery lashes, there are some significant perks of embracing a no-mascara look. For one, makeup removal is a breeze, and never worrying about raccoon eyes is pure bliss. But maybe the best part of the no-mascara aesthetic is the confidence gained by regularly rocking a bold lip. Reds, berries, pinks, browns—these shades feel refreshingly classic, and a little edgy, when paired with bare lashes.
