President Donald Trump is frequently in the news—not only for his political actions, but also, interestingly enough, because of his appearance. His signature orange-tinted, bleached hairdo is constantly trending on social media as a source of mockery, and a new book reveals that even his daughter, Ivanka Trump, often pokes fun at his hairstyle.
According to New York Magazine’s excerpt of the recently released book, Fire and Fury: Inside Trump’s White House, Ivanka Trump has frequently spoken about her father’s signature hairdo with friends for years. She even allegedly revealed that the President has undergone scalp reduction surgery to preserve his thinning hair.
“She treated her father with a degree of detachment, even irony, going so far as to make fun of his comb-over to others,” New York Magazine writes. “She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate—a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery—surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.”
For those who are unfamiliar with the procedure, it’s performed by removing the bald part of the scalp at the top or crown of the head and sewing together the edges of the nearby, hair-filled skin.
While this surgery may work in theory, the American Hair Loss Association calls it a “procedure to avoid,” claiming it’s “barbaric” and “disfiguring.” Although, New York facial plastic surgeon Benjamin Paul, MD, doesn’t believe Trump had the traditional scalp-reduction surgery this book claims he had, but rather he tried something else entirely. “It is plausible he had a rotational flap, called a Juri flap, where the side hair is rotated toward the central hairline,” Dr. Paul explains. “One concern with a Juri flap is that the hair exits in a very unnatural direction, though from these hairs, hair extensions can be woven as well as transplants can be placed. This would explain the famously unnatural direction and pattern of his hair.”
Even though we may never know the truth behind what Trump has and hasn’t done to his hair, these are certainly plausible predictions. But for anyone looking to improve their own receding hairline, Dr. Paul recommends a hair transplant instead, so certainly skip the scalp removals for now.
