How the Election Has Changed Women’s Hairstyles, According to a Celebrity Hairstylist

The inauguration of a new President is expected to change a multitude of things for U.S. citizens, mainly along the lines of federal policies and foreign affairs. However, the one thing we never expected to see post-election? A swift change in popular hairstyle choices.

“We’re coming to a bit of a feminist movement right now [as Donald Trump enters office] and it’s certainly translating into the beauty and fashion world,” says celebrity hairstylist and Wella Ambassador, Andy LeCompte. “Women are looking to be stronger and feel more empowered, so we’re seeing a big masculine meets feminine vibe happening this year with a bit of a softer, tomboy look.”

LeCompte makes sure to note that you don’t have to give up your sexuality to still emulate power—celebrities are walking examples of that. So, if you’re looking to tune into your inner fierce feminist and feel a bit more confident in yourself (there’s an entire psychology behind how your hair can affect your self-esteem), give one of these celebrity stylist–approved looks a try.

Slicked-Back Side

“This look gives off a major tough girl, rock-and-roll vibe,” says LeCompte. The harsh contrast between the neat, slicked-back side and the opposing, soft barrel curls perfectly balances the work-appropriate, yet still sexy look. To recreate the style yourself, first curl the hair, leaving it loose on one side. Then, place the other side of your hair into a deep side part and slick it back before securing with a bobby pin.

Tucked Behind the Ears

“This simple look shows the hair sleek and behind the ears—it’s very chic right now,” says LeCompte. Having a neat, polished hairstyle like the one seen on Jessica Alba exudes confidence and professionalism. To give hair an extra shine when styling this look on yourself, smooth a dollop of hair oil like Wella Luminous Smoothing Oil ($40) onto dry strands as your last step for an extra glossy effect.

Visible Sideburns

Controlled updos have notoriously been a go-to style for career-driven women, making ponytails a symbol of success in the workforce. Not only did Jennifer Lopez’s choice of this no-frills, power pony make that exact statement on its own, but LeCompte claims her loose sideburns add a boyish feel to the pretty look as well.

Deep Side Part

A deep side part flatters most face shapes and hair textures, which is why so many women frequently wear it. Even better, the neat style is a minimalist look that’s easy for very busy women to recreate in a time crunch, making it a great way for prominent women to change up their look without having to spend a lot of time styling. Give the ultra-professional style a looser look by adding waves like those seen on Julianne Moore to the ends of your hair.
