Margot Robbie, who made Barbie-blonde hair oh-so covetable, has officially ditched it to embrace one of this season’s most popular hair colors: strawberry blonde strands.

On Monday, April 8, the 33-year-old actress was photographed on the set of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. In a picture obtained by People, Robbie is all smiles, sporting long strawberry blonde hair complemented by full bangs. Her outfit—comprising a navy blue polo shirt, cropped jeans, and knee-high boots—looked equally chic.

The closest Robbie’s hair ever got to her new hair color was in 2014. According to Bustle, the actress embraced a shorter, redder style for her role as Jane in the live-action film Legend Of Tarzan. She stepped out with the hair color for the One For The Boys charity ball in London, England.

Clearly, Robbie’s film projects influencer her hair color. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey movie marks Robbie’s next chapter since starring in Barbie. She will star alongside Colin Farrell in the film, which, per Variety, is “an imaginative tale of two strangers and the extraordinary emotional journey that connects them.”

Even though the hair change is for her latest project, it’s still on trend, right up there with “honey blonde” and “cowboy copper.” In a previous interview with NewBeauty, hair colorist Rita Hazan explained that strawberry blonde is “a mixture of red and blonde tones that comes out in a dusty rose/orangey color. Depending on your skin tone, you can opt for more blonde tones or deeper red, but to achieve full strawberry, you would most likely have more blonde showing through.”

Celebrity hairstylist Johnny Lavoy further emphasized Hazan’s point that blonde takes more prominence than red, explaining,
“Strawberry blonde hair is best described as a light golden blonde hair with a touch of copper—not at all as red as a strawberry.”

Need some examples to visualize it the hair color? Celebrities that epitomize the strawberry blonde hair color trend include Blake Lively and Heather Graham.

Strawberry blonde hair can be someone’s natural hair color, but you can also get the look at the salon. Just be warned that it might be a process for some. Hazan says that “strawberry blonde works best if you’re already a blonde, because all you have to do is deposit red undertones. For brunettes, this process might take longer because you have to strip your natural hair color and dye it blonde, but it’s still possible. If you’re a redhead, you can add blonde undertones to make the shade lighter depending how rich the red is.”

Lavoy adds that “to get a true strawberry blonde you’re going to want to have your hair to a level 9 or 10. This means if you’re darker than that naturally you are going to have to lift the hair first before achieving your target color, which can be a lengthy process with lots of maintenance. You are also going to tend to pull a little more copper than gold. I recommend a consultation with a colorist before making the dive.”

And while hairstylists and colorists encourage experimentation, certain features may complement strawberry hair best. According to creative director, master stylist and colorist Paul Labrecque with Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa, it’s a beautiful choice for those with “light skin tones and those with blue or hazel eyes and freckles on the nose.” He warns that it may “look brassy on darker or olive skin.”
