Fitness enthusiasts can all agree: Wearing makeup during a workout can wreak havoc on your skin. Sweat runs mascara down your face, foundation clogs your pores and lipstick smears everywhere, but avoiding makeup altogether isn’t always an option for those of us who like to add a little oomph to our look.
Luckily, fitness blogger and creator of the Bikini Body Guide, Kayla Itsines, has found the answer to this common makeup debate all that fit, makeup-loving women seem to have. Apparently, all it takes is a few simple treatments to avoid wearing eye makeup altogether: eyelash and brow tinting.

According to a recent post on Instagram, Itsines revealed her skin care routine (she washes and moisturizes her face every morning and night), her body care routine (she exfoliates once a week and moisturizes with coconut oil) and how she avoids having to wear mascara every day (lash tinting).
“I tint my eyebrows and eyelashes so I don’t need to wear mascara,” she explains in the post, adding that she never wears foundation. For someone always partaking in high-sweat activities, it’s pretty genius for Itsines to opt for lash tinting rather than simply wearing waterproof mascara. Sticky, sweatproof mascara can be a major pain to take off, even causing possible lash damage from the constant rubbing and tugging during the removal process.
By dying her lashes a darker shade than her natural color during the eyelash tinting process, Itsines is able to create the illusion of more prominent lashes, making the use of mascara completely unnecessary. Similarly, brow tinting also uses dye to color her eyebrows a deeper shade, giving them a thicker appearance and eliminating the need to fill in her brows each day.
Brow tinting and lash tinting typically last about three to four weeks (depending on the person) and are relatively quick to do. Considering they can help minimize post-workout makeup snafus, as well as shorten your morning routine, we understand why Itsines would be such a fan of the process. Just be sure to research reputable salons who offer the treatment before booking your appointment if you’re thinking of following suit—this should always be done by a professional.
