Julianne Hough shared a stunning bare-faced selfie with her 4.5 million Instagram followers today, leaving every last one of us wondering what she does to keep her skin looking so great. The the 30-year-old actress, dancer and former Dancing With the Stars judge was once the face of Proactiv, but she hasn’t shared much on the exact products she uses every day. What she has shared, however, are her best practices to keep her skin beaming and blemish-free—and after taking one look at this photo, we’re committing them all to memory.
“When my skin gets very dry, I give it extra moisturizing love around the clock,” Hough shared with her followers on her eponymous blog. “At night, I’ll slather on a heavy cream and during the day I’ll use a less thick (but still protective) moisturizer,” she notes. “In addition, I’ll gently exfoliate 1-2 times a week to remove dead or flaky skin.”
While Hough doesn’t share the exact products in rotation, she’s a fan of noncomedogenic formulas “to avoid breakouts” and those with active ingredients. “So definitely skip the fragrance,” she recommends to keep skin calm. Another clear-complexion tip she subscribes to is drinking plenty of water. “Our skin needs hydration from the inside out,” she contends.
However, Hough makes sure to note that while certain products and formulas work for her skin, they may not work for all of us. “In fact, it could make your skin worse!” What she does know for sure? “The more products you mess with, the more you’ll upset your skin as it tries to adjust to new formulas. Too many active ingredients and frequent facials could also keep your skin in panic mode. Often, less is more.”
In response to a reader unsure what to do about her own exacerbated skin, Hough replied with some sound advice we can get behind: “My suggestion is to make an appointment with a dermatologist,” she shares. “Bring the products you’re using with you to see if they’re the right ones for your skin type. A doctor can steer you in the right direction and maybe even prescribe you something stronger if you need it.”
