What Is Hair Tucking?
While the name somewhat speaks for itself, celebrity hairstylist and Garnier Fructis stylist ambassador Dimitris Giannetos explains that, “Hair tucking is a type of hairstyle that elevates a regular hairdo by simply tucking some hair behind the ear. It is a simple slicked-back hairstyle that can easily eliminate those annoying fly-aways or baby hairs.”
Education manager at Alterna Haircare, Paul Wintner adds that, “Hair tucking is a huge trend that hitting the red carpets this season. Essentially, hair tucking is a style where the hair in the front is smoothed down and tucked neatly behind the ears, making it a versatile and effortless way to change your look, add sophistication to your style, or keep hair out of your face. It’s seems like a simple style, but there are a few hair hacks to keep the hair in place.”
How Do You Hair Tuck?
“If you have longer hair hair tucking can be fairly easy as it’s quite literally just a tuck behind the ears,” begins celebrity hairstylist Johnny Lavoy, “But, if you have thick hair or small ears or ears that sit close to the head some hacks and products might come into play to secure your hair tuck. For the small-eared or thick-haired people who have found the hair won’t stay behind the ear, I suggest sectioning the hair to be tucked and using a elastic to create a little ponytail at the nape of the neck to hold the hair in place. The loose hair will cover the hair creating a flawless tuck.”
Does Hair Tucking Work With Bangs?
If you have curtain bangs or any sort of face-framing fringe like me, your first question when it comes to hair tucking is likely, “Can I even do that?” In short, the answer is yes, it just takes a little extra effort. While people with long hair can typically just slick back their front pieces and secure with a clip or bobby pin, a bit more technique is needed with bangs.
“For shorter hair, one hair-tucking hack is to use an elastic to secure the hair just behind the ears,” begins Wintner, “Then, twist the hair up and through the top of the elastic to create a space to bring the hair from the front of the ear and pull it through the hole. Tighten the elastic to secure and you’re good to go.” See below for a video tutorial from TikTok creator Lina Noory.
