3 Proven Ways to Grow Hair Faster featured image

Once your hair starts to change in texture and it doesn’t grow in nearly as fast, thick or pretty as it used to, chances are you have to take matters into your own hands. Whether it’s the effects of aging taking hold, or years of hair abuse catching up, there are a handful of solutions and products that really work to make your hair grow faster.

Use a Supplement
The trick to improving hair is to take the right kind of supplement. New York dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, says supplements are a great way of ensuring you’re getting the proper amount of vitamins in one daily dose, making a difference in the overall health of your hair. “A typical hair cycle is roughly six months, so if you take an oral supplement, you need to give it time to work.” One ingredient to look for is biotin, a B vitamin. “B vitamins play a key role in overall hair growth,” says Dr. Engelman. “Biotin is water soluble, which means the body can’t retain it, so you need to get enough of it each day.” Two she recommends: Viviscal ($50 for a one month supply), a marine supplement that works to stimulate new hair growth, and Nature’s Bounty Optimal Solutions Extra Strength Hair, Skin and Nails ($10). “It’s the very first formula to include argan oil, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants in a multivitamin to target hair.”

Reconsider Collagen
Yes, it already exists in our bodies and was once used to plump the face. But, collagen is making its mark yet again as a beauty booster of sorts, and one of its many benefits is better hair. Tim Mount, certified clinical nutritionist and director of education for NeoCell, says that collagen works to improve hair growth in two different ways. “It surrounds the root of the hair, enabling nutrients to be transported to the hair follicle and anchoring the hair in the skin. But, collagen declines with age, so fewer nutrients reach the hair shaft and the hair starts to thin. Because the anchor around the root of the hair weakens, hair is more likely to fall out.” Increasing collagen (with either a daily dose or a treatment) can help hair grow faster, thicker and healthier.

Eat the Right Foods
What you put into your body shows on your head. Following a diet that’s nutrient-dense and rich in vitamins, minerals and antixoidants gives the body what it needs to get a jumpstart on the growth process. “Protein from food (or supplements) helps accelerate existing hair growth and incite new hair growth, too,” says Dr. Engelman.
