Goldie Hawn is urging fans to take notes on her morning routine. In a recent Instagram reel, the 78-year-old actress donned a pair of blue and white pajamas and sported her signature blonde blowout to highlight three wellness practices she swears by to kickstart her day—all from the comfort of her bed. The video was created in collaboration with Mindup, the non-profit organization Hawn founded in 2003 to help children and young adults develop strong social and emotional skills.
Below, we detail the simple steps to emulate the Academy Award winner’s ritual.
Step One: Breathe
The first step is straightforward: breathe. “Before you jump out of bed, you just want to breathe,” she told her 3.7 million Instagram followers. “Breathe in, hold it for five seconds, and breathe out. After your third [breath], all of a sudden, your eyes open up. It’s kind of crazy.”
Hawn’s breathing ritual is a great entry point for meditation. Kira Jones-Matousek, founder and CEO of Cacti Wellness, previously recommended a similar technique to NewBeauty. She suggested mentally telling yourself to “inhale” as you breathe in and “exhale” as you breathe out, explaining that this method helps quiet a busy mind by focusing attention on the breath.
Step Two: Stretch
After stimulating her mind, she focuses on waking up her body. “Then, I stretch,” she shares with her viewers as she throws back her bed covers. Demonstrating her routine, she pulls one knee to her chest, extends her leg towards the ceiling, sits up, and leans forward to stretch her back.
Step 3: Gratitude Practice
For the final step in her morning wellness routine, Hawn takes a moment to reflect on three things she’s grateful for, often citing her family as an example. Then, she sets a positive tone for the day. “When you get up, you say, ‘I’m going to have a really good day today, no matter what—even when we have problems, even when we have sadness, even when we have fear, this is going to be a good day.”
Hawn is not the only celebrity who embraces gratitude practices. In April 2022, actress Samira Wiley shared her approach to gratitude as well. Instead of simply reflecting on what she’s grateful for, she chooses to write it down. “Gratitude is about mind, body and spirit, so, for my mind, my wife got me into journaling. At first, I was like, ‘What is this? A diary?’ But it’s really just a way to get your thoughts out and have a productive, constructive start to your day.”
Wiley also emphasizes the importance of effort: “Trying is something too, you know? I feel like so many people don’t try gratitude practices for themselves because they feel like they’re going to fail.” In other words, not trying is the only true failure.
