Obagi’s New Neck Serum Is the Real Deal for Stubborn Lines featured image

With our phones and computers hogging most of our time in any given day—if you’ve never looked at your screen time logs for your favorite apps, it can be quite scary—our necks and shoulders pay the price, which often comes in the form of stubborn lines. That’s when a potent neck serum becomes your best friend, and much-needed daily ritual. Obagi Medical ELASTIderm Neck and Décolleté Concentrate addresses not only the lines, but also so much more. (And, you can actually try it yourself if you’re one of the lucky ones to snag this week’s BeautyPass Free Gift Friday. Click here to sign up for BeautyPass if you haven’t already).

The Benefits:

Visible signs of aging and stress on the neck include horizontal lines (or bands), crepey skin and sagging, as well as discoloration (sun damage doesn’t discriminate). Though the skin on the neck is different than that on the face, ollagen and elastin can still break down, leaving you with skin you hardly recognize when you look in the mirror. This supercharged serum uses a patented Bi-Mineral Contour Complex to encourage the production of healthy elastin, which in turn, reduces the appearance of lax skin and those stubborn horizontal neck lines (I can’t stand mine, and I know my mom feels the same way!). It also contains a line-smoothing retinoid, and we know the power of retinoids for aging skin. It’s not called the gold-standard for no reason. The third heavy-hitter in the mix is alpha-arbutin, which is beloved for its brightening properties.

I love that the serum comes in a rollerball applicator (it’s more like a roller bar because it’s wider than a ball) as well, which allows me to massage the area as I apply the serum. Not only is it a nice daily ritual to start and end my day, but the massaging motion also brings blood flow to the surface of the skin for a nice healthy glow.

In a 12-week blinded study conducted by the brand, participants showed a 27-percent average improvement in fine lines on the neck, a 24-percent average improvement in crepiness on the neck, and a 22-percent average improvement in horizontal neck lines. On the décolleté, participants showed a 36-percent average improvement in fine lines, a 23-percent average improvement in crepiness, and a 22-percent average improvement in skin smoothness. Results were seen in as little as eight weeks for some participants, but this data reflects information collected at the end of 12 weeks.

Key Ingredients:

Patented Bi-Mineral Contour Complex, retinyl palmitate, alpha-arbutin and niacinamide

How to Use It:

After washing your face, neck and décolleté (don’t forget your neck and décolleté!), apply the serum morning and evening: Twist the applicator into the ON position and gently squeeze the tube to dispense a thin layer of serum onto the skin as you glide the rollerball along. Tilt your chin up and use upward strokes from your décolleté to your jawline. Once you’ve gone over each area once with the serum, twist the applicator to OFF and then go back and continuing using it to massage in the serum (OFF ensures you won’t be releasing anymore serum as you’re gliding). Give it a couple minutes to dry before you get dressed (I like to brush my teeth in the meantime, and after that it’s dry).

What It Feels Like:

A refreshing, gel-like serum that leaves a silky finish on the skin once it’s dried. I can also feel a little slip on my fingers afterward if I use my fingers to rub in any lingering serum, which is due to silicones in the formula.

What It Smells Like:

It has a very faint botanical scent.

The Bottom Line:

The neck can be a tricky area to treat, but this potent serum and accompanying massaging rollerball make it easier and more enjoyable, and deliver real, visible results.
