Good news out of the grocery aisle. A new study has confirmed that one of the juiciest and sweetest summer fruits is not only delicious, but helps protect your skin from sun damage too. Scientists have found that strawberry extract, when added to skin cell cultures, acts as Mother Nature’s protector against harmful ultraviolet radiation and damage to DNA.

The research, published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, found that when strawberry extract is added to skin cell cultures, especially at a concentration of 0.5 mg/ml, and exposed to high levels of UVA radiation, cell survival increases and damage to DNA decreases when compared to cultures that didn’t have the extract.

Scientists concluded in the journal that these findings are the “first step in determining the beneficial effects of strawberries in our diet or as a possible compound source for ‘food integrators’ or cosmetics for instance” to fight against skin cancer and other inflammatory skin issues.

This news means you will likely see lots of beauty brands start incorporating the extract into photoprotective creams and lotions and that you can feel less guilty about indulging in that piece of strawberry pie.
