Did you know an estimated 50 percent of Americans admit to avoiding regular dental visits due to fear and anxiety? Good news: we’ve recently learned of a revolutionary dental tool that’s quickly becoming a catalyst to mitigate fear in patients, allowing them to receive long overdue dental treatments and cosmetic procedures.

We asked Boca Raton, FL, dentist and inventor of the DentalVibe Injection Comfort System, Steven Goldberg, DDS, to tell us all about the new device that enables dentists to deliver virtually pain-free injections.

How does DentalVibe work?
According to the Gate Control Theory of Pain-published in the journal Science in 1965 by Drs. Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall-a gating mechanism contained in your spine either allows or prevents the sensation of pain from reaching the brain. I invented a device that sends sensations of vibration to the brain at a rate twice as fast as pain signals can travel. This keeps the neurological gating mechanism closed and the brain from receiving any pain sensation.

What exactly does a patient feel when DentalVibe is first placed on the injection site?
When an injection is necessary, the comfort tip of the DentalVibe is placed at the injection site. The patient will feel a soothing, pulsed, percussive vibration.

Who is DentalVibe for?
The DentalVibe can be used for both children and adults. It may be administered on any area of the mouth and because it only uses vibration, there are no restrictions to its application.

What other benefits does DentalVibe provide?
Because distraction is a common technique used to comfort patients during dental procedures, a buzzing sound has also been added to the device. Although the DentalVibe works on the principles of science, the buzzing simply acts as a diversion to further distract patients. More importantly, dentists are reporting a faster onset of anesthesia when they stimulate the injection site with DentalVibe. Apparently the anesthetic solution dissipates through the tissue and reaches the nerves faster because of the vibratory stimulus created.

Can DentalVibe be used alongside any other procedures?
Other uses for the DentalVibe are underway. The next version is being designed for medical use alongside cosmetic face injections such as neurotoxins, like Botox, and dermal fillers. Additional dental applications are currently being studied at many dental schools throughout the U.S.
