If you’re one of the millions who’ve seen (and loved) the new Hollywood musical La La Land, you may have noticed how stunning Emma Stone looks. She’s elegant, beautiful and in crazy amazing shape as she dances and sings her way through huge musical numbers.

To get into that kind of shape, Stone worked with major Hollywood trainer Jason Walsh. Walsh has also trained A-listers like Matt Damon and Jennifer Aniston. He was hired to build up Stone’s energy and stamina to get through the big numbers where she sings and dances.

And luckily, Walsh revealed to the Sun some key tips to get in La La Land-Emma Stone shape. First, he praised the deadlift as the most reliable form of exercise. “It is, and always will be, the deadlift and variations of the deadlift,” he explains. “It’s a complex movement that incorporates every major muscle group working together. It’s very important.”

Next, he claimed that strength workouts must be prioritized over cardio. “Staying strong supports the skeletal system, stabilizes joints, makes your cardio safer and more effective,” he said. He also points out that when done right, strength training can produce plenty of cardio as well. “Cardio comes secondary.”

He also believes that moderation is key. “I do think sugar and the abundance of carbohydrates is the root to most obesity in the US.” However, that doesn’t mean completely forgo carbs. “Eat breakfast, taper carbohydrates throughout the day, and don’t eat late.” As for sugars, he limits the intake. “I limit all sugars, and I add UDO’s Choice Oil to food daily for essential fats,” he says. “That’s where I get my energy from, not sugar. You could lose 10 lbs immediately just from cutting out sugar.”
