Head & Shoulders, T/Gel, we’ve tried it all, and nothing is more annoying than seeing those pesky white flakes in your hair and falling onto your (as luck would have it) all-black outfit. But could the answer to dandruff we’ve been searching for all this time been on our bathroom counters all along?

Beauty YouTuber Farah Dhukai posted a photo on Instagram explaining how original Listerine is her cure-all for dandruff. Dhukai explains that the idea is simple—all you’ll need is the mouthwash and a spray bottle (fill halfway with Listerine and halfway with water and shake)—and all you have to do is spray the mixture onto your scalp after you shampoo and condition. Let it sit for a few minutes (around five) and wash out with water.
She warns that it’s normal for your scalp to feel like it’s tingling and cool as it works and afterward—but also shares that it will be dandruff-free (and bacteria-free thanks to the antiseptic and antifungal properties from the mouthwash). However, West Palm Beach, FL, dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD, isn’t convinced you should default to Listerine for this purpose. “While the ingredients are good, there are so many products designed for the scalp that have formulations designed to treat dandruff and do a great job.” So while beauty innovations pop up every hour, sometimes it’s best to “use as directed.”
