A perfect nose doesn’t really exist says New York facial plastic surgeon Edward S. Kwak, MD, as each one is unique to its owner. “The best-looking noses aren’t perfectly shaped,” he says. “The best nose is one that fits your face and creates harmony with your facial features.” While each nose may be different, there are categories that define the most distinct types of noses.

We can look to the noses on famous faces to see that a button nose or slender nostrils would not look best on everyone, and sometimes the most harmonious nose is not the smallest or the straightest. While we might covet the noses on a Hollywood star, we shouldn’t run out to get plastic surgery to try and emulate them as many nose features are unique. “There are many beautiful faces and most celebrities and models have beautiful faces despite imperfections of the nose,” says Salt Lake City, UT facial plastic surgeon P. Daniel Ward, MD. “Remember that imperfections and asymmetries are part of a normal face.”

In 2011 Israeli professor Abraham Tamir found there were 14 different types of noses using a sample size of 1800 images. He used images from prominent artworks over time, photographs of people he’d taken in Europe or Israel. Critics of his study believe it is limited as it did not include nasal features from other continents. Among the most common types of noses is the ‘fleshy’ nose; the Roman nose; the celestial (turned-up) nose; the Greek nose; the Nubian nose; the bumpy nose; the hawk nose; the snub nose; the East Asian nose; the bulbous nose; the ‘Nixon’; and the combo nose, which exhibits multiple features from other nose types. Here, we break down 10 the celebrity noses that perfectly represent specific elements of these distinct types of noses.

Upturned or Celestial Nose

This type of nose is petite with a slight bend in the bridge and an upturned tip. The celestial nose (also known as upturned or turned-up) can be seen on stars like Emma Stone, Carrie Mulligan and Florence Pugh.

Snub Nose

Elizabeth Taylor is a great example of the snub nose shape which has similar characteristics as the celestial/upturned nose—it’s also small and petite—but with a rounder, softer tip.

Roman Nose

A Roman nose, sometimes referred to as an aquiline nose, is slightly curved with a prominent bridge. Gisele Bundchen and Meryl Streep are two great examples of how strong, powerful noses can enhance someone’s features and unique beauty.

Hawk Nose

Long, narrow and with a bridge that turns downward, the hawk shape is said to resemble the beak of a hawk. Fashion icon Diana Vreeland and the owner of one of the most famous noses of all time, Barbara Streisand, have both been described as having this distinguised nose shape.

Greek Nose

A fitting representative of her heritage and background, Jennifer Aniston has said in the past that she’s been blessed with a “Greek nose.” In 2018 she shared that she underwent a rhinoplasty to fix a deviated septum, but has preserved the aesthetics of her nose. This type boasts a long, straight shape from bridge to tip.

Button Nose

A button nose is small, has a rounded nasal tip and can be turned up or down slightly, making it appear more round like a button. It’s often described as the most desired shape and can be seen on celebrities like Jenna Ortega, SZA, Kelly Rowland and Scarlett Johansson.

Bulbous-Tipped Nose

A bulbous nose has a tip that is enlarged and rounder at the bottom. Chelsea Clinton, Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz have all been rumored to have refined their noses for a more slender tip.
