After years of glowing and glazing for all we’re worth, we’re beginning to see the return of more mattified skin. Only this time, make it rich and creamy, with just a hint of that natural dewy glow. The goal is to look natural, blur imperfections and create a smooth, supple surface. When you put it like that, there’s only one name that fits! Introducing butter skin.
What is butter skin?
A revamped, more skin-like take on matte makeup, butter skin is notably creamier. Think the ease and glide of spreading butter and the nearly-glossy sheen. In our makeup, that means selecting modern matte coverage that still retains a moisturized, dewy look.
“Matte skin tends to show all the imperfections and fine lines in our skin,” explains NYC makeup artist Natalie Dresher. “For butter skin, you’ll want to prioritize skin care to help achieve a flawless base. Then, choose a foundation that has a skin-like finish. These products are matte but usually have that soft, buttery glow you’re looking for.”
For skin types that are dry or normal, this trend is an ideal way to prioritize your moisture. Oily skin, on the other hand, may find that butter skin offers a little too much glow.
Minimize Imperfections With Good Skin Care
Keep your skin looking like a brand new stick of butter with a quality skin-care routine. Dresher recommends investing in quality tools to keep your skin looking flawless.
“Because this skin trend requires a really good base, I like to prep with the Nira+ Pro laser ($649),” Dresher says. “For the price of one laser facial, I can treat my skin to a medical FDA-approved facial in the comfort of my own home daily. When I couple using the Nira+ Pro with makeup, specifically matte makeup, my base look flawless.”
You may also find that a blurring, perfecting or mattifying primer can help minimize spots and pores or control oil.
