The Formula For A Perfect Style

To achieve a look that’s flattering from all angles, opt for a style with some volume or face-framing pieces. “Depending on the shape of your face, a style with volume is often the best choice but others may prefer a smoother look,” says Pepper Pastor of Pepper Pastor Bridal for L’Oréal Professionnel. “Recent trends show both styles, of which the popular options were volumized top knots and smooth low chignons.”

The Look: Loose Locks

Choose a Style that complements your color.
According to celebrity stylist Marie Ferro, highlighted hair looks great with curls because it creates interest and movement.

Get Inspired By Your Dress
The design of your dress has a big
impact on the hairstyle that you choose. “The style of the dress and the neckline, will help determine if your hair looks best up or down,” says celebrity hairstylist Nunzio Saviano. “With a low-cut dress, hair often looks better down, but everything should be in proportion.”

Consider a Keratin treatment
For summertime brides who choose to wear their hair down, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Once Upon a Bride Stacey Weinstein suggests having a keratin treatment two weeks before to keep the hair smooth.

The Look: Side Swept

Go Easy On Conditioner
According to Weinstein, conditioners tend to add weight to the hair, so if you decide to wear your hair down, use it lightly so that your hair isn’t flat.

Boost Volume
Volume is key for nailing this side-swept look. Use a root spray for lift, and blow-dry with a round brush.

Finding Your Favorite Style
Share your favorite snapshots with your stylist to help guide her in the direction you’re going. “I suggest creating a Pinterest board to house all of the looks you love, as well as those you don’t, so you can share them with your stylist,” says Pastor. You can also add pictures of your dress or flowers, to give an idea of the full look you want to achieve.

Determining Color
Coloring your hair too close to your wedding is a major don’t. “Create a hair color plan with your stylist six months prior to the wedding,” says Pastor. “Never go too extreme with the shade. It is best to stay within two to three shades of your natural color. The time of year may also be a factor in how you choose your color. For winter weddings, it’s nice to add shine with an allover gloss to enhance gold and copper tones. In warmer months, balayage color and highlights look wonderful.”

Add a Chic Hair Accessory:
An easy way to glam up your style is to add an accessory. You can use it as your “something blue,” or as a way to add character—a vintage family heirloom turned into a hair piece is a great way to honor a special relative. Weinstein says that a bride’s decision to wear a hair accessory is a personal one, but that it can really make your hair have it’s own moment. “Adding a jeweled headband or unstructured flower piece to your style can be a fun way to change up your look throughout the night with no fuss.”

Get Shiny, Long-Lasting Style
For a shiny, long-wearing updo, don’t shampoo the morning of the wedding. Second-day hair will hold the style much better.
