Does Organic Hair Dye Work As Well As Regular?

With so many women swapping out their chemical-laden beauty products for more natural versions, it's no wonder they're even opting for organic hair dye over traditional formulas. Although you can't find this type of dye in every salon, we're seeing it crop up more and more as the green movement grows. The question is, however, "Is organic hair dye just as effective as the regular kind?" We turned to the experts for the answer.

Turns out, there's much debate on the topic. Celebrity colorist and owner of Base Color Bar in LA, Haleh Lekkos, says organic is not as effective most of the time, but that it can be for some people. "It doesn't totally cover grays, and if it does, the dye doesn't last as long as regular types," she says. "It also sometimes changes in color because organic dye can be affected by hormones, which can create a different result on certain people."

On the opposition, Jeanine Taddonio, North American salon educator for Organic Colour Systems, says hair responds better to natural ingredients because you support the health of your hair while coloring it. "Our line, which is free of ammonia, resorcinol, parabens and propylene glycol, allows you to achieve 100-percent gray coverage, longer-lasting cool shades of blond and high-fashion hair colors just like any other type of dye. Organic Colour Systems has been carefully formulated with a natural base, which is much kinder to the hair shaft. Therefore, it doesn't disturb the cuticle as much, so it doesn't cause damage to the hair."

The bottom line: Talk to your colorist to find out which options are the best for your specific hair color. Shades of blond and gray tend to be the problem children that experts go back and forth on when discussing the effectiveness of organic dye. But, some brands say their are no issues with these colors. So, I think it's safe to say that if you want to make the switch, go right ahead.

Organic hair dye can absolutely cover as well as all the other colours, but without damaging your hair! I work at NATURIGIN and Natulique, and we promise 100% coverage of grays and the colour lasts for a longer time than other brands that I have used before. Plus, with the right organic products you can actually nourish your hair at the same time due to natural ingredients and oils :)

We use OCS in the salon I work in. We get 100% coverage and hair returns time and again not looking dried out and lifeless. If it wasn't for the regrowth I wouldn't know what our clients were there for. :-)
