From perfectly framing your face to giving your every look an instant lift, the importance of a good brow can’t be stressed enough. And who knows that better than the brow geniuses at Benefit Cosmetics? We’ve turned to Jared Bailey, global brow authority for Benefit, to give you five easy steps to make over your brows.

Visit a Pro
Before tackling your brows at home, Bailey recommends a professional brow shaping for a custom arch that will add definition to your eyes and accentuate your facial features. “For appropriate symmetry and balance, it’s always best to visit a pro,” Bailey says.

Map Your Brows
According to Bailey, brow mapping is a three-step custom technique to finding your perfect shape before shading. He suggests taking your favorite brow-filling makeup and marking each of these points:

  • The Start: Measure straight from the dimple of your nose to the beginning of your brow. This will create a slimming effect on your nose and balance your eyes.
  • The Arch: Begin at the edge of your nose and pass through the pupil to the highest portion of your brow. This will give maximum lift to your eye area.
  • The End: Measure from the outer edge of your nose past the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should end to create an eye-opening effect.

Connect the Dots
“Once you’ve identified each point, connect them with a brow filler like Benefit Brow Zings ($32), using short, hair-like strokes starting along the base of the brow for structure,” explains Bailey. “Follow the direction of the hair growth while filling in and avoid any harsh lines along the way to keep it as natural as possible.”

Keep it Natural
Bailey explains that brows always look their best when you use a gradient of color—in other words, make it look natural. Bailey suggests taking a brow comb and blending the beginning portion of the brow to remove any excess product and lighten up the start.  “Leave the center around the arch slightly deeper to help accentuate the height and shape,” he says.  “The end of the brow should be blended as well to lighten it up and remove any bluntness from the shape.”

Highlight Your Finished Product
According to Bailey, highlighting the brow can act as an instant eyelift. “After filling in the brow, dot your highlighter just along your brow bone. Pat it outward toward the end of your brow for a soft, natural look.” For a bit more definition, he also suggests drawing a thin line along the bottom of your brow from the start to the end—he recommends a linen pink highlighter like Benefit High Brow ($22)—and using a concealer brush to blend along the base of your brow.

And there you have it! Perfect brows. To keep them polished and in place throughout the day, swipe a few strokes of a brow gel along your arches to give them a gentle hold.
