The best haircuts are the ones that are easy to style yet full of movement and texture. Unfortunately, some haircuts do the opposite of that—unless you get the right style, that is. Ghost layers, a haircutting technique created by hairstylist Ramòn Garcia, is the latest trend to take over Instagram and the perfect cut if you're looking for a modern, low-maintenance hairdo for summer.

According to a new interview on Mane Addicts with the creator of the trend, ghost layers are the perfect cut to remove bulk from within the hair for warmer days ahead without losing too much length. “It’s a technique that adds movement and texture while giving the illusion of a one-length haircut,” says Garcia. “It works for all types of hair, so it really is the best of both worlds. Varying lengths are key—shorter pieces work to add motion to locks, while longer layers serve to camouflage these pieces.”

Just as the name implies, ghost layers create a look that appears one length at first glance, but ultimately contains light layers within the hair. In the past layers have implied drastic cuts, so because this is more subtle, consider it the updated version. “I wanted to give people a more modern look,” Garcia explains. “You can’t see [the layers] until you’re walking down the street and the wind hits you.”

As a bonus, this cut is great for people with highlighted or ombré hair. Because you’re not cutting too much off, it’s easier to extend the life of your color while still updating the shape of your hair. We’ve reached out to Garcia for additional tips on the style and we’ll update when we hear back. Until then, here are a few of our favorite examples of ghost layers that just scream "summer style"—a lightened up shape that's full of movement:
