The New No-Mess Overnight Masks That Rejuvenate Skin While You Sleep

If you're always on the go and hardly have a minute to take care of your skin or you just don't get the difference between mask A and cream B at the store (every product looks and sounds the same to you), these new masks from Musely, a healthy-living e-tailer, make skin care (and anti-aging) way easier to tackle.
You're probably familiar with mud masks, sheet masks, rubber masks—the list goes on—but what about overnight hydrogel masks? They apply like a dry sheet mask—the outer layer feels soft and felt-like and the inner layer feels like solid, rubbery gel (it's not wet and saturated with liquid like traditional sheet masks)—so you can wear them while you sleep without dirtying your pillowcase.

The thick hydrogel layer is specially designed with holes in it that slowly release liquid into your skin throughout the night, so when you wake up and peel off the mask, the gel is gone. That means a host of powerful, antioxidant-rich botanicals and fruit extracts—think sea buckthorn seed, cucumber, green tea, pomegranate and more—have successfully made their way into your skin so they can repair and rejuvenate it. Plus, as it's been proven many times by science, your skin's repair function is at its highest while you sleep, so using products at bedtime is especially beneficial.
According to the brand, the idea for the masks was inspired by a discovery made by a medical lab—they invented a type of hydrogel to keep burn wounds moist, and Musely saw a potential beauty application for it to keep skin hydrated. Turns out, the material has the ability to increase skin hydration by 10 percent overnight, which is what makes the masks so effective.

San Francisco dermatologist Marie Jhin, MD, the resident derm for Musely, says, "The two biggest causes of wrinkles are facial expressions and pressure, like when you're getting a massage and your face is pressed against the face cradle. Facial expressions may sound like a problem only when you're awake, but many women actually frown when they're sleeping. Additionally, side sleeping or stomach sleeping puts pressure on the face and creates subsequent face wrinkles. That's why the Musely masks are such a great idea. They can be worn overnight, actually preventing these two kinds of wrinkles from forming."
Another plus: The masks come in different shapes and sizes, designed to fit certain areas of your face like your forehead and under-eye (there's also one for your neck) rather than only giving us the full-face, Jason-esque masks we're used to. Although, the brand does offer a full-face version too if that's your cup of tea. Each style varies in the amount of masks you'll get in a box (between five and 10), as well as price ($32–$39), and there's an Anti-Aging Set that features the whole group for $48, too. You can also purchase individuals for as low as $4 if you want to give them a test-run first.
