Along with her bangs, Zooey Deschanel’s fluttery eyelashes are essential to her signature look. True to form, the actress posted a selfie on her Instagram that drew her followers’ attention to her long lashes.

“Don’t mess with me I haven’t had coffee,” Deschanel captioned the photo, which she appears to have snapped in the back of a car. The rest of her makeup looks relatively minimal, allowing Deschanel’s eyelashes to really pop.

The photo made some people curious about how she achieved her long, dark lower lashes. While applying mascara can go a long way, Deschanel’s followers wondered about whether she used other techniques.

“We the people need to know what bottom eyelashes you’re using queeeeen!?” reads one comment with hundreds of likes. A few other commenters responded, echoing the suggestion that Deschanel had been wearing individual false eyelashes along her lower lash line. Some false lashes are designed expressly for the purpose, such as Ardell Bottom Lashes ($6) and Norvina A Moment False Eyelashes ($12).

It’s also possible that some of the “lashes” were drawn on with liquid liner, creating an optical illusion of sorts. It’s a technique that Deschanel’s makeup artist used to prepare the actress for the Golden Globes back in 2013. Inspired by Twiggy, makeup artist Jorjee Douglass painted on lower lashes with liquid liner before applying two coats of Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-In-1 Mascara ($27), she told NewBeauty at the time.

Douglass was taking a similar approach to the icon who she was drawing inspiration from. In a video posted on the Charlotte Tilbury Youtube channel, Twiggy shared that when doing her makeup, she used to wear three sets of false lashes on top and paint on her bottom lashes.

It’s worth mentioning that mascara alone can go a long way in enhancing your bottom eyelashes. Using a technique that became popular on TikTok, some people create “doll lashes” by painting mascara onto their lower lashes, then clumping chunks of lashes together using tweezers.

Deschanel has yet to spill exactly what went into her eye makeup. But it’s safe to say that mascara, false eyelash clusters, and fine-tip liquid liner pens can all contribute to a similar effect.
