Tracee Ellis Ross's launch of Pattern Beauty filled a large gap within the beauty industry as it gave us the ability to style curly hair like a professional straight from their vanities. Now, the 48-year-old is filling in another gap, but it's not with another brand launch. Instead, she's launching a new docuseries, The Hair Tales, in collaboration with none other than Oprah Winfrey.
"This series is about identity, culture and legacy, beauty, strength and joy,” Ross says in a statement, Variety reports. “Hair is a portal into the souls of Black women, it drives straight to the center of who we are. Our goal is to share this vibrant community, where we hold a sacred space for each other. Like many women, I can trace my own journey to self-acceptance through my hair. This series is personal and universal, American and global. It is a love letter to Black women.”
To create the film, Ross has collaborated with Winfrey and writer Michaela Angela Davis—she is narrating the series—to break down the history of black hair and how it's tied to today's culture.
The Hair Tales will begin production later this year for a 2022 debut, and it will premier on the Oprah Winfrey Network as well as Hulu’s new platform Onyx, a channel made for creators of color.
