Growing up with curly hair, I was lucky to have a lot of hair and tons of volume. In fact, I spent the majority of my adolescent years wishing I had less of both. In my seventh-grade school picture, my hair practically took up half the photo. Sure, it was the late ‘80s, and the bigger the bangs, the better, but I felt like my hair continuously entered the room before my petite frame or face did.

My hair has always been a big part of my identity. Like many of you, some of my earliest childhood memories, and my sense of self, are deeply tied to it. So, when I started shedding strands at an alarming rate and seeing clumps of it in my shower drain, it was more than just upsetting. It was emotional.

After some quick medical tests, the cause was clear: perimenopause. With my mid-40s now in the rearview mirror, I’ve been riding the hormonal rollercoaster express for a few years. Somehow, though, I missed the memo that hair loss was one of the stops. Of course, many women lose hair due to more serious health conditions or medical challenges, like chemotherapy, and no matter the cause, the impact is real. Hair loss is devastating and disorienting.

I started researching solutions and quickly fell down a rabbit hole of supplements, serums, functional health beverages and much, much more. Then came the acronym overload: PRP, LLLT, SMP…and OMG, what was I even researching again? That’s when I began to wonder: Is there an easier, more glamorous option? What about high-end, seemingly seamless, possibly posh…wearable hair?

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Dolly Parton are all known for rocking stunning wigs and extensions that look natural, stylish and completely seamless. Most people don’t even realize they’re wearing faux hair because today’s luxury brands make it hard to tell the difference.

With high-quality human hair, modern technology and hyper-personalized solutions, the latest options can be a total game changer for anyone looking to feel like themselves again—or even better, like the most radiant version of themselves ever.

Research + Reality

If you’re noticing hair loss, the first step is to speak with your doctor and rule out any serious underlying issues. Once you’ve done that, you can assess how significant your hair loss is. A bit of research combined with a dose of reality is crucial. For mild thinning and volume loss, extensions can be a great way to add fullness. But for more advanced hair loss around the crown, there are gentler, no-damage options to explore. As celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins notes, “Hair is emotional; hair is transformational. And, hair is so tied to many women’s feelings of femininity.” A self-proclaimed “wiggy,” Hawkins considers wigs both a fun form of self-expression and a life-changing option for dealing with hair loss. Clip-ins, tape-in extensions or keratin bonds work well for moderate thinning, while toppers are his go-to for thinning at the crown. For full coverage, Hawkins suggests glueless lace front wigs paired with a spray-on adhesive and the L’Oréal Professionnel AirLight Pro hair dryer ($475), using the diffuser attachment to lock it in.

Hair Extensions

Before diving into this story, the word “extensions” immediately conjured an image of ultra-long, ultra-glam looks—more South Beach pool party than the everyday look I’m seeking. But, after speaking with Randilyn Dela Cruz, vice president of product development at BELLAMI, I learned there’s more to extensions than meets the eye. “Our products are more than just extensions—they’re designed to enhance what’s already there,” Dela Cruz said. Renowned for their professional-grade quality, these extensions are made from 100-percent human hair that is ethically sourced as Virgin Remy from approved regions. This level of quality gives stylists the ability to blend techniques, known as cocktailing methods, to create a personalized installation. “This approach is especially important for clients with thinning or fragile hair, where strategic placement and seamless blending can make all the difference,” explained Dela Cruz. The extensions come in a wide shade range—from natural tones to ombré and fashion colors—and a variety of styles, including clip-ins, tape-ins, keratin bonds, I-Tips and hand-tied wefts. The options can feel a bit overwhelming to a newbie like I was, which is why your best bet is to make an appointment with a certified BELLAMI stylist. If the longer-lasting extensions trigger your inner commitment-phobe, you can test the waters with a Do-It-Yourself solution, like the Silk Seam Clip-in. The brand also recently launched new Silk Seam Textured Clip-Ins in several patterns for curly girls. Fair warning: Hair pros call clip-ins the gateway extension product because once you start using them, there’s a good chance you’ll be hooked.

Toppers

While looking into natural topper options for thinning hair, I came across Hairdreams MicroLines. This product is designed for women with more advanced hair loss, especially on the top of the head where traditional extensions won’t work due to lack of hair and strand fragility. Dorian Thomas, managing director of Hairdreams for North America, explained that the brand’s patented topper is crafted from an ultra-lightweight, breathable mesh that sits comfortably at the crown and is combined with the highest quality, 7-STAR human hair. Each strand is methodically hand-tied into the mesh, one at a time, using tweezers and a magnifying glass. What makes the result look so natural is that your own hair is gently pulled through the mesh, allowing it to blend seamlessly. Thomas also explained that the piece is worn 24-7 and bonded to your natural hair with the brand’s proprietary BondingRing, so it stays secure without the weight or heat that can come with traditional wigs. A quick look at Hairdreams’ social media pages will leave you in awe of the complete and total transformation it offers. The best part? It’s easy to maintain and surprisingly low-effort—just requiring a quick salon visit every four weeks, with the appointment taking between 10 and 90 minutes, depending on the level of service. You can wash and style MicroLines like normal hair, and the application is done exclusively by salon professionals who are trained and certified by the brand.

Custom Wigs

Troy Mitchell, founder of You Again Wigs, believes the word “wig” itself doesn’t truly capture the emotional weight behind why many women turn to hairpieces for hair loss. “I think the word ‘wig’ is incredibly generic, and honestly, not very loving,” he says. “It doesn’t reflect the emotional reality many women are facing when they experience hair loss.” Mitchell breaks wigs into three categories: costume/ fashion wigs, celebrity/trend wigs, and what he calls medical wigs—his area of expertise. These aren’t about fashion or standing out; they’re for women “who just want to feel like themselves again. Not to stand out, but to blend in.” Hair loss, he explains, can be emotionally devastating, and while the media is filled with promises, he notes that there’s still no magic cure to stop or regrow hair. For those navigating medical treatments or hormonal changes, a thoughtfully made wig can offer more than aesthetics; it can restore a sense of dignity, confidence and control. “They’re about healing,” Mitchell says, “not styling.” For more severe hair loss, he recommends avoiding attaching anything directly to your thinning hair. He stressed that fragile or thinning hair typically can’t handle the added weight or tension, as it could lead to further damage or even more hair loss. Mitchell’s suggestion is a wig or hairpiece that rests on the scalp, or a properly fitted base like the ones he offers his clients.

The Beauty of Options

These days, I see the thick, curly hair I once cursed in my youth as a blessing—especially now, as I navigate this new chapter. I’m fortunate that my hair loss mostly affects volume rather than the crown, which means extensions are an option for me. I’ll start off with clip-ins (commitment issues are real), but who knows? A more permanent solution may be in my future. The bottom line is that whatever level of hair loss you’re dealing with, you’ve got choices. It’s all about finding the option that fits your lifestyle, meets your needs, and most importantly, helps you feel like you again.
