Pimple patches have been one of the most popular acne products since their debut into the beauty world, offering a quick and effective solution for pesky breakouts. But, in the age of social media, consumers are always looking for ways to use what they already have for innovative purposes. One such example? Pimple patches for bug bites.

Recently, one TikToker went viral for showing the removal of pimple patches from her bug bites, showcasing a rather extraordinary build up of gunk under the patch. Like most TikTok trends, though, we decided to consult the pros before declaring pimple patches for bug bites the latest beauty hack.

Pimple Patches for Bug Bites: Does it Work?

While we all know that hydrocolloid patches (more colloquially known as pimple patches) suck the bacteria out of active breakouts, do they do the same for bug bites? According to New York dermatologist Marisa Garschick, MD, the science behind the trend checks out.

“Pimple patches often contain hydrocolloid, which are designed to help draw fluid out and can help to reduce inflammation which may make them effective even for bug bites,” says Dr. Garshick. “Additionally, the occlusive nature may help to protect from scratching.” As always though, practice caution any time you’re trying something new on your skin. “That said, some pimple patches may also be formulated with other ingredients like salicylic acid, which can actually be irritating for the skin, so it is important to be cautious,” Dr. Garshick cautions.
