As if omega-3 didn’t already have enough proven merits, researchers are now saying it’s clear that it has antidepressant effects. After pooling data from numerous omega-3 trials, a Taiwanese medical team has published this conclusion in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

The bodily benefits of omega-3 from sources like fish, fish oil and flax seed oil have long been touted in the medical and anti-aging communities, and when it became apparent that there were low levels of depression in areas of the world where diets were especially high in omega-3, the psychiatric community took notice, too.

By reviewing multiple studies, the researchers deduced that omega-3 deserves more attention to determine if and how it can be used as a reliable treatment for various types of depression, including bipolar disorder and postpartum depression.
