All makeup kits may not be created equal when it comes to color payoff, but when it comes to chemicals entering the mix, it’s all a moot point as popular mall retailer Claire’s just found out.
The company recently removed 17 products off shelves amid asbestos concerns after a Rhode Island woman had the ingredients in her 6-year-old daughter’s glitter makeup kit tested by an independent lab, according to Rhode Island news station WJAR.

Claire’s has since issued a statement, saying they’ve pulled the products as a precautionary measure.
“At Claire’s the safety of our customers is of paramount importance, and we are passionate about the safety and integrity of our products. We work closely with our vendors to ensure our products are tested and assessed in line with the relevant country regulations and guidelines. As a result of today’s inquiry from WJAR-TV, we have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale, and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues. Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action.”

Update: While Claire’s says they will continue to honor returns, on Friday the company refuted the claims that the products contained asbestos. According to USA Today, the initial results of testing by an “independent certified laboratory show that the cosmetics tested to date are asbestos-free. Out of an abundance of caution, additional testing is underway. We have also confirmed that the talcum ingredient supply is from a certified asbestos-free European vendor.”
