The bob was the biggest hair trend over the past six months, and it’s still holding strong, with many celebrities keeping up with their chops. However, we’ve noticed that there’s a new cut in town that has everyone talking. Celebrity colorist Rita Hazan says she’s seen the kitty cut gaining popularity, and so have we.

What is the kitty cut?

Celebrity hairstylist Natasha Leibel describes the kitty cut as “the wolf cut’s high-class friend.” She adds that “everyone is growing out their Hailey Bieberbobs. It’s a natural migration of the last trend,” says Leibel. “No layers. Layers. No layers. Layers. A tale as old as time.”

Hazan feels that part of the kitty cut’s popularity is its versatility. “You can opt for a kitty cut if you have longer or shorter hair and still be able to customize how you want your layers to lay. It’s extremely low maintenance and suits any hairstyle,” says Hazan. Wahler feels this style really blew up from TikTok. “I think it’s trending because it’s flattering on all face shapes, and it’s so easy to customize to any length of hair,” she adds.

What is the difference between a kitty cut and a wolf cut?

Hazan explains, “Much like the wolf cut, a kitty cut is designed to add dimension to the hairdo. It focuses on layering and framing the face in the front with bangs and other techniques while keeping the rest of the haircut simple and sleek.” Celebrity hairstylist Ashley Wahler says this cut is also like “a more gentle feminine version of the shag. It’s simpler with softer, rounded layers.”

Should I get a kitty cut?

The kitty cut can be adapted to suit just about anyone, but there are some prime candidates for the hairstyle. Leibel says the kitty cut is a great style for people growing out their bangs or anyone who wants to break up their one-length hair. Additionally, “anyone with long hair who’s looking for a playful, elevated change” and people “who like to tie their hair up but like frisky, spirited bits and bops to come out and party” are great candidates.

Hazan feels this style “is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to add some dimension to their look. It has a refined and polished feel to it, and it can beautifully frame the face to give it a feline and elegant appearance.”

Celebrities With a kitty cut

“I am currently loving Jenna Ortega’s latest look. Her perfectly executed medium-texture layered cut is accentuating her features, making her look flawless,” says Hazan. “I have personally styled similar hairdos on Beyonce with varying layers that complement her face shape—and it always looks stunning.” Liebel points to Jennifer Aniston and Billie Eilish as other stars rocking the trending cut.
