When it launched earlier this summer, the SKIMS Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap sold out almost immediately—an instant success met by an equally instant flurry of public scrutiny. Marketed as “face shapewear,” the jaw-to-crown compression garment promises “ultra-soft jaw support,” crafted from the brand’s signature sculpting fabric and infused with collagen yarns. But behind the sleek branding, the product sparked widespread debate over beauty standards and marketing, all while asking the age-old question: "Does it work?"

While Reframe, the high-performance skin-care brand founded by Savannah James, may not generate the frenzy or controversy surrounding lines like Kim Kardashian’s, it is quietly making its entrance with a science-forward approach to skin care that also focuses on the very appealing-sounding "compression" result.

The brand’s latest release, the Compression Complex Facial Sculpting Cream ($95), is a daytime moisturizer designed to hydrate, protect and visibly sculpt the skin. Formulated with what the company calls “tensioning technology,” the cream also claims to deliver an immediate tightening and smoothing effect, housed in a lightweight serum-in-cream texture. It also claims to bolster hydration and oxygenation while forming a breathable barrier against environmental aggressors, including blue light.

“When developing Reframe, I wanted to create products that truly support skin performance at every level," shares James. "Compression Complex was born out of my own desire for something that could deliver that ‘held-together’ feeling of firm, supported and resilient, without sacrificing comfort or luxury. We combined clinically backed actives with an innovative compression technology that helps the skin feel instantly more contained while driving long-term results."

James also believes we'll see more brands move into this space, as consumers are looking for products that do more than just sit on the skin. "They want visible change and a sensorial experience. For us at Reframe, compression wasn’t just a trend to tap into—it was a way to reframe how topical treatments can help the skin function at its best.”

How do compression creams work?

The short of it, says Dallas dermatologist Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD, compression creams create a temporary tightening effect through film-forming and hydrating ingredients, which can make skin look smoother and more lifted. "While they offer a nice cosmetic boost, they don’t replace the long-term collagen stimulation and lifting we achieve with in-office procedures. Compression creams are an exciting concept, but it’s important to look closely at the ingredients behind the marketing. Most ‘snatching’ or tightening effects you see immediately are due to film-forming agents, peptides or polymers that create a temporary lifting sensation on the skin’s surface. These can provide a smoother look for several hours, but they don’t physically remodel collagen or lift tissue long-term."

Are there benefits to compression creams?

That said, the claims of a well-appointed, well-formulated skin-care product do have some support: "If the formula includes proven actives—like peptides, antioxidants or barrier-supporting ingredients—it may help with skin hydration, resilience and protection against environmental stressors, which are meaningful benefits," explains Dr. Houshmand. "For lasting improvements in skin laxity and firmness, topical creams can complement, but not replace, in-office procedures such as energy-based tightening or injectables."

In the particular case of the Reframe product (the brand is derm-tested and does have clinical studies), fans seem to appreciate the cream for those exact reasons. "I was expecting good but this is next level!" shared one happy reviewer. "This moisturizer is luxurious. From the cream/gel-like consistency that absorbs into my skin leaving it looking and feeling soft, supple, glowy and hydrated. This moisturizer gives glass skin in the best way. It wears really well throughout the day, keeping my combo skin feeling balanced. No breakouts at all and I'm finding myself using less makeup in order to really enjoy the skin-care glow from this moisturizer. 10/10 recommend!!"

The bottom line:

The skin-care short of it: "While compression creams can deliver a visible ‘boost’ and add value to a simplified routine, patients should understand that the results are mostly cosmetic and temporary, rather than structural or permanent," says Dr. Houshmand.
