Not all reds are created equal.

Traditional, unfussy and always in style, red nails are a classic that never disappoints. The shade is universally flattering and especially striking on melanated skin. “On deep complexions, red isn’t restrictive—it’s expressive, adaptable and effortlessly eye-catching,” says Riyah Martin, a nail artist and mixologist at ORLY Color Labs.

Because brown skin has so much natural variation, there’s no one-size-fits-all red. From crimson and scarlet to cherry and deep bordeaux, there are plenty of options to explore. To help narrow it down, we tapped two nail artists for insight. Ahead, the best red nail colors for deep skin tones, but first, a quick look at how undertones, pigment and saturation affect how red shows up on deep skin.

How to Choose the Best Red Nail Polish for Deep Skin Tones

Choosing the right shade of red comes down to your undertones. “Deep skin tones work best with saturated reds,” says Miami-based nail artist Karyna Kyliushyk. With a higher concentration of pigment, she explains, these shades have enough oomph to hold their own on richly melanated skin tones. “Muted reds have their place, but tend to fall flat on deeper complexions,” she says. The goal is contrast and depth—less about strict rules and more about finding a red that feels true to your personal style.

Candy Apple Red

While most red nail polishes make a bold statement, this vivid shade goes a step further. According to Kyliushyk, candy-colored reds are especially flattering for enhancing golden undertones and adding warmth.

Brick Red

"Earthy reds work well on deep complexions because the richness of the color complements melanin instead of working against it," says Martin. To recreate the effect, look for a red polish with clay undertones and finish with a shiny top coat.

Fire Engine Red

For an edgy take on a classic red, try a fire engine–colored polish. According to Martin, the bright orange tones give red a cool, neon effect that’s anything but boring.

Oxblood

Like a well-aged wine, this dark burgundy is rich and undeniably striking. Contrary to what you may think, the cool blue undertones are the star of this shade. “They play against the natural warmth in deeper complexions and create an alluring contrast,” says Kyliushyk.

Cherry

Experts agree that no collection is complete without a cherry-hued polish. “It’s highly pigmented and creates a vibrant, luminous finish on deeper complexions,” says Martin. Kyliushyk adds that cherry reflects light beautifully, bringing dimensional depth to a manicure.

Tomato blends the warmth of orange-based reds with the earthy feel of clay and brown-toned shades. The result is an elevated manicure that still feels playful.

Crimson

"True crimsons create a jewel-toned effect that looks expensive and deliberate," says Kyliushyk. Opting for a polish with subtle hints of shimmer enhances the luxe feel and shine of your manicure.
