We’re starting to see a major shift in how we talk about aging in our society. Instead of always thinking about it as something to prevent, people are embracing the idea of aging gracefully.

Angelina Jolie is the most recent celebrity to endorse this ideal. She recently spoke with InStyle about why she loves seeing herself get older.

When asked how she handles being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, she explained that it “warms her to look in the mirror and see her mother.”

“I also see myself aging, and I love it because it means I’m alive—I’m living and getting older,” she told the publication. She continues that she doesn’t always love her flaws, like “a random dark spot from pregnancy,” but there’s more to it than the appearance. “What I see that I like isn’t about a structure or an appearance. It’s more that I see my family in my face. I see my age.”

This thought process is such a refreshing sentiment to hear from a leading lady like Jolie. It’s a beautiful reminder that aging isn’t all about how you look, but rather the journey that got you there.
