We’ve seen Cynthia Nixon go through a lot of every-woman battles as Miranda on “Sex and the City”-from losing baby weight to binging on chocolate cake. Now, Nixon is sharing another common problem she deals with in her real life: rosacea.

When she broke out in pimple-like bumps, she dismissed it as adult acne, she told FoxNews Health, but was later diagnosed with rosacea about four years ago. Rosacea, a chronic vascular condition caused by inflammation, leads to facial flare-ups for more than 16 million Americans.

Nixon, 46, quickly found that she was doing all the wrong things to her skin, like using strong facial scrubs and harsh astringents to try to clear up what she thought was acne. Her doctor eventually had her switch to a topical medication as well as use a gentler, more predictable skin-care routine. She also worked on keeping her stress levels under control. Many people with rosacea also find that their skin flares up more after drinking alcohol, eating spicy foods or drastic changes in temperature.

Now the actress has signed on as a spokesperson for the National Rosacea Society to raise awareness about the condition so others don’t go undiagnosed. “Once I went to the doctor and got a little medicine and a little advice, I was on the right path,” Nixon said. “I was struggling for years. I could have saved myself a decade of scrubbing.”

If you suspect you have rosacea, go to the NRS website, rosaceafacts.com, and take a quiz to see if you may have the condition, then see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis.
