Longevity is one of the biggest buzzwords in wellness right now, and the more I learn about cellular aging, the more I want to invest in myself. Of course, eating healthy and exercising will help me live a longer life, but supplements provide that extra boost at the cellular level. A couple of months ago, I saw Dr. Mark Hyman talking on Instagram about how people with lean muscle tend to live longer, and I was intrigued. He said that strength training is our best defense against aging and disease: “Muscle is the organ of longevity.” Then I saw he also recommended a supplement called Timeline Mitopure. I had tried Timeline’s skin-care products before but didn’t realize the brand also had a longevity supplement. Here’s the scoop.
Though there are copycats, Timeline’s Mitopure is the original urolithin A supplement. The brand’s scientists discovered the ingredient, which they named Mitopure, more than 15 years ago. “We discovered a postbiotic from pomegranate,” chief marketing officer Frederico Luna tells me. “It’s not made by the pomegranate; it’s made by the gut if you’ve got the right little microbes in your microbiome. Unfortunately, very few people have it, so we developed a highly pure, molecularly identical form called Mitopure. It gives you six times more urolithin A than a glass of pomegranate juice. We were the first and only ones—and still are today—to take it through human clinical trials, and we’ve shown remarkable benefits. We have so many patents on it. It’s the real deal.”
The Benefits of This Longevity Supplement
So, what does Mitopure do? It’s an easy and efficacious way to boost cellular energy—it actually boosts your mitochondria. “Mitochondria are the little ‘batteries’ inside our cells,” explains Luna. “As we age past our 30s, those mitochondria run out of charge. They’re lying there in zombie mode. The body has an amazing system to clean them out, recycle them, and make new ones, but that system breaks down, too. When those two things collide, it leads to all sorts of issues like muscle, immune and collagen decline.”
Mitopure also strengthens muscle from the inside out and boosts endurance. “It’s extremely powerful,” says Luna. “One of the best things about it is that it makes other things work better.” In fact, Timeline has conducted five clinical studies, which show that muscle strength increases by up to 12 percent after 16 weeks and muscle endurance increases by up to 17 percent after eight weeks. These are significant changes.
The vegan capsules are softgels and don’t just sit in your gut doing nothing (and causing tummy troubles). “We do a lot of research on bioavailability to make sure we can get the Mitopure molecule into the body systemically and also into the targeted organ,” says Luna. “All of our studies have proven the supplement to be bioequivalent. In just a day or two, your cells kickstart the recycling and rejuvenation process. Mitophagy begins, which means damaged mitochondria are tagged for recycling.” After 30 days, new, healthy mitochondria are moving into place. After 60 days, endurance benefits become apparent, and after four months, muscles feel stronger. At this point, according to Timeline, inflammation has also decreased in the body, which will also be apparent. Inflammation is the root of many ailments, concerns and aging. Yes, this longevity supplement makes some big claims, but the science and reviews speak volumes.
How to Use It
Take two softgels per day. They look kind of like kidney beans, both in shape and color. They did not cause me any stomach issues, and I tried taking them both with food and on an empty stomach.
