These days, we’re searching for any little bit of inspiration we can find to get us off the couch and to get moving. Actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish is giving us our daily dose with the announcement of her 40-pound weight loss.
“During this COVID period, I’ve lost 40 pounds,” Haddish tells PEOPLE, adding that she’s been hitting the gym every day for up to two hours. Her inspiration: “I had this thought in my mind that I want the body of Olympian athlete Flo-Jo,” she says.
While the Girls Trip star has dramatically amped-up her workout routine, she explains that her diet has changed a lot, too. “I’ve been eating differently, eating way more vegetables, definitely eating directly out of my garden and just really putting in the work…Nutrition is everything!”
According to PEOPLE, finding the right balance in terms of nutrition has been a long road for the 41-year-old, coming from a past of homelessness and food insecurity. “I was homeless and hungry—that’s two H’s you don’t want to be! Once I got over that hump, I felt relieved. But I also felt like I must continue to work and create opportunity for others so I don’t end up that way again.”
Explaining that her past has made her stronger today, Haddish says, “I believed there was definitely going to be a better day, that the things that I was going through was to get me stronger for something greater. That the pain that I was feeling was all to prepare me for success.” If her newly toned body doesn’t exemplify her hard work and strength, we don’t know what does.
