Procter & Gamble Just Made a Huge Change in What It’s Disclosing About Its Products

And more companies should follow suit.

The Procter & Gamble Company (parent company to household names like Olay, Tide, Febreze and Herbal Essences) announced today that it will share all of the fragrance ingredients it uses in its products, down to 0.01 percent, for its entire product portfolio in the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2019.

As consumers are becoming more educated in the beauty space and more interested in the ingredients used in their everyday products, this move is a good one. Certain fragrances in cosmetics and personal care items have been known to cause allergic reactions and irritations, which is why many skin care professionals and dermatologists recommend fragrance-free products to those with sensitive or allergy-prone skin. Even natural ingredients and essential oils, which often give a product its scent, can cause unwanted irritation.

According to P&G, it is “the first company to commit this level of fragrance ingredient detail across such a broad product portfolio”—more than 2,000 products. Although the company already shares the majority of its products’ fragrance information online, this new initiative will offer consumers even more transparency and information so they can find the best products for themselves and their families.

“Our goal is to give people information that is clear, reliable and accessible,” said Kathy Fish, chief technology officer at Procter & Gamble, in a press release. “This is another step in our sustainability journey toward enabling consumers to make informed choices. We’re providing more information about fragrance ingredients because we believe this will build even greater trust in the quality and safety of all of our products.”
