What is a preppy bob?

At the base it’s a clean, blunt bob, says celebrity hairstylist Karen Miller. The look is a polished, effortless take on the old money trend, adds celebrity hairstylist Marc Ballance. “It can go from jaw length to just above shoulders and be cut with subtle layering that doesn’t take away from that classic bob shape but gives a modern luxury feeling,” he adds.

Ballance recommends the look to anyone looking for a statement haircut. “It’s a beautiful shape that will bring full attention to the face of the person who wears it. Think high fashion and striking images,” he says. Miller is confident anyone can pull off the look as long as their stylist caters the cut to them. “I choose the length and weight removal based on what will compliment the face shape,” she explains.

How to style the preppy bob

1 / 5

Blowout

With a round brush and a little added bounce, you can take the bob to a softer place, which Ballance notes is very trendy right now. Miller adds that this cut would look great with a soft 90s blowout as well.

Poker straight

“Wearing the hair in a perfect part and styling the bob poker straight is for sure a statement look,” says Ballance. “When pulled off well, it can be the only accessory you need.”

Waves

Ballance’s personal favorite way to wear this bob is with flat iron waves. ”Recently I’ve shown everyone how to flat iron wave the bob to give it a casual, cool girl feel,” he says. Miller also loves this cut styled with loose beach waves or S waves.

Beveled ends

Miller says the preppy bob is often styled with slightly beveled ends. It’s a quick and easy addition that adds a chic edge to the look.

Air dried

This cut can look just as chic air dried in its natural state as it does with the above styles, says Miller. Just apply the right product for your hair texture and let nature do its thing.
