Effective today, Pinterest will be prohibiting all advertisements with any imagery or language pertaining to weight loss.
This policy update will make Pinterest the first and only major social media platform to ban all ads relating to weight loss, dieting or body shaming. Underneath the “Healthcare Products and Services” tab on Pinterest’s website, there is a list of prohibited advertisements and body shaming, “such as imagery or language that mocks or discredits certain body types or appearances,” is included. Today’s update, however, is a much-needed expansion to the brand’s current policies.
According to the brand, Pinners are shifting their searches from weight-loss methods to ways to accept their bodies. In fact, people are searching for “healthy mindset quotes” 13 times more than they were in 2020, and searches for “body neutrality” are up five times since last year.
In honor of the update, Pinterest creators such as Tabria Majors, Shiquita Hyman, Tiffany Ima and Alex Michael May will be sharing Pin inspiration on the platform’s Today tab to spread a positive message and influence others to stray away from posting body-negative photos.
