“LED light has been proven effective in the skin due to its ability to stimulate molecules in the dermis and epidermis,” says New York dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD. Different color lights penetrate and stimulate our cells at different wavelengths. “Both at-home and in-office LED treatments (think IPL and BBL) use a spectrum of visible light from low-level to intense light therapy, whereas a true laser uses super focused energy in a single wavelength,” Dr. Marmur adds. You only need a few minutes of light treatment per day, and some masks and devices contain all of the colors mentioned here to treat multiple concerns. “The right combination of wavelengths customized to your skin needs will improve your overall skin health and appearance,” says New York dermatologist Julie Russak, MD.
Blue LED Light
Dr. Russak says blue light targets acne-causing bacteria. “It generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), reducing inflammation and preventing breakouts. These effects have all been validated by multiple clinical studies.” In some cases, you can see results after one use; others may require regular use.
Purple LED Light
“I particularly love this color because it combines the powers of the more commonly used red and blue light therapies for maximum effectiveness, giving you the most amazing benefits,” says Dr. Marmur. “Purple light is great for those treating acne and fighting wrinkles, while also providing a peaceful recharge.”
Green LED Light
Green light therapy is a great option for discoloration and works by inhibiting melanocytes, our pigment-producing cells. “It’s effective in reducing pigmentation issues such as sunspots, age spots and melasma for brighter, more even skin,” Dr. Russak says. Dr. Marmur also recommends green light for reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and large pores.
Yellow / Amber LED Light
This wavelength is great for evening out skin tone. “It also helps reduce redness and irritation, making it beneficial for those with sensitive skin or rosacea,” Dr. Russak explains. Yellow light also increases radiance. “This color improves skin circulation by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system,” adds Dr. Marmur. “It gives skin a fantastic glow, and helps strengthen its microbiome.”
Red LED Light
The most well-known and widely used color in LED therapy, “red light works by stimulating mitochondrial activity and increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production,” says Dr. Russak. “This promotes collagen synthesis and improves skin texture, making it great for scars.” It also boosts blood flow to the skin’s surface for a nice, natural glow.
