In a new video for Vogue, actress Kerry Washington broke down her beauty routine, and while she touched on everything from her go-to red lip color to her favorite highlighter (spoiler: it’s Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer ($22), we were shocked by how simple her hair-care routine is.
“We’re gonna start out with hair, and I use a homemade scalp tonic that I put together,” says the Little Fires Everywhere star as she holds up a pink spray bottle. “I put it in my favorite spray bottle, which is this Pattern bottle that my friend Tracee Ellis Ross made.”
Getting in her roots and underneath her long, beautiful braids, she sprays the DIY concoction all over her head. “In here is distilled water, non-alcohol witch hazel, and then some essential oils—rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender—so it keeps your scalp super healthy and also you become walking aromatherapy,” she says. “I like to use scalp spray because sometimes when you’re wearing protective styles [like braids] for a long time, your scalp can get a little itchy or have a product buildup, so the witch hazel keeps your skin on your scalp really fresh and clean and the oils stimulate growth and also calm, which is nice.”
Washington’s less-is-more approach doesn’t stop at her hair-care routine. Her edited beauty lineup includes Serena Loves Aura Cleansing Mist ($48), Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Eye Masks ($25), Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ($23), and Mented Cosmetics Red Matte Lipstick in Red Carpet ($14).
