Dandruff used to be something you were ashamed to admit you had, but thanks to social media sharing and more brands launching products in the space, it’s no longer so hush-hush. Some products, like Kérastase Symbiose Scalp Renewal Micro-Exfoliating Scrub, are so chic, you can hardly tell they address dandruff concerns by looking at packaging. Nonetheless, according to the National Institutes of Heath, dandruff affects about 50 percent of the adult population worldwide. It’s a common problem—I’ve experienced it—but there are efficacious solutions to tackle it head on. I like to think of scalp care as a form of self care. Recently, I tried the Kérastase Scrub, and I loved the way it made my hair look and feel. Here’s the scoop.

The Benefits of This Scalp Scrub

This formula uses a potent duo of pyrithione zinc and salicylic acid to relieve symptoms associated with dandruff, such as flaking, irritation and itching. An itchy scalp is the worst! You also don’t have to have dandruff to enjoy the benefits of this formula. If you’re someone who uses dry shampoo or other styling products that build up on your scalp or in your hair, this exfoliates all that gunk away using salicylic acid and plant-based beads. It even makes my color look better because it gets rid of all the dead skin cells and buildup that dirty up my blonde in between washes.

Some scalp scrubs leave my hair feeling squeaky-clean, but not in a good way. Like your skin, you shouldn’t be aiming for squeaky-clean because that indicates that your barrier has lost some of its natural, healthy oils. This scalp scrub, on the other hand, gives me that really clean, purified effect without the stripped feeling. Steffan Tricoci, senior education manager for Kérastase, has a good pro tip as well. “For extra exfoliation, try applying it to a dry scalp first. Then add water and emulsify, and watch the gel-like texture transform into a milky consistency with lather.”

How to Use It

Twice a week, apply it to wet hair before you shampoo. Massage it in really well (scalp massage is great for stimulating healthy hair growth) and then rinse it out. If your dandruff situation requires a little bit more treatment, the brand also offers a non-exfoliating anti-dandruff Shampoo and Night Serum in the same collection.
