Katie Holmes isn’t exactly known for her forthcoming nature with the media, which is why a recent interview with the 39-year-old actress is so exciting for many of her fans.
In a new interview with Women’s Health, Holmes opened up about the workout routine she developed to prepare for her upcoming action movie, The Doorman, in which she plays an ex-marine. “I wanted to be authentic to a person who trained in the military,” Holmes said in the interview. “Which means someone who wasn’t always paying attention to the mirror and who was in shape not for vanity, but because that’s what her job called for.”

So, Holmes had to amp up her workouts over the months before filming, opting for frequent two-hour sessions with a trainer doing crunches, squats and dumbbells. “I was a five-pound-weight person, and now I can do 15, 20,” says Holmes. “And I’ve been doing a lot of boxing, which I had never done before. It’s thrilling. You can get out the stress of the day. I just go in there and think of all the mundane things that bother me. Traffic!” she continues. “I put off all my phone calls till after boxing, because it puts me in a much calmer place.”
However, just because Holmes threw herself into solo workout sessions with a trainer, she still made sure to find time for the group workouts that she enjoys, like SoulCycle. “I like that sense of community,” Holmes adds. “Like, if she can do it, I can do it too.”
